But they weren’t relatable.īeavis and Butt-head’s creator, Mike Judge, once said that the two were pure idiots because “a show about straight-A students would not be funny.” But Eichler, who owned the rights to Daria after creating her for Beavis and Butt-head, recognized the potential for humor in a strong female character who was both smarter and funnier than everyone around her.Īfter all, fish-out-of-water comedy is the oldest trope in the book, but it’s a good one. In their own ways, all three teenagers offered a wry and scathing commentary on the status of American culture at the time, which made them so relatable to the teenagers for whom the two shows were appointment television.īeavis and Butt-head the characters weren’t much for social criticism, but the idea that we find such a, when it all comes down to it, vapid and moronic pair of teenagers endlessly entertaining is social commentary enough.īut Daria was able to offer something that Beavis and Butt-head were not: an opportunity for outcast teens to identify with a character on television in the ’90s who wasn’t formed from the mold of Susie High School.īeavis and Butt-head were amusing. However, it’s crucial not to lose sight of Daria’s roots, which initially were quite literally to stand for everything Beavis and Butt-head did not: intelligence…wit…a basic ability to exist in society…. Some people will take umbrage with the idea that Daria is a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-head, since they are never mentioned, much less appear, in her show. We first met Daria Morgendorffer at Highland High in the Beavis and Butt-head episode “Sign Here,” though her character wouldn’t become fully realized until she received her own show, created by Glenn Eichler. We’re here to talk about how Daria, a Beavis and Butt-head spinoff, improved on its source material.

It’s just how it’s done.Īs you can see, in FanSided’s MTV Madness tournament, our girl Daria exited in a shocking six seed/three seed upset in the Round of 32 to Teen Wolf, while Beavis and Butt-head lives to play another day after defeating MTV Unplugged. We can enjoy them both for their respective, numerous merits.īut in the world of March Madness, we pit things against each other over and over again to deterimine a champion. In the real, non-animated world, we don’t really ever have to decide which of MTV original television shows Beavis and Butt-head and Daria is better.
